One of our favorite moments was during a recent ceremony where the officiant surprised the couple with a reading of their first text messages to each other. It was sweet, funny, and so unique to them.

Unfortunately, not all officiants rise to the occasion. Sometimes, their intentions are good, but the execution falls flat. Common issues include:

• Unpreparedness: Forgetting the couple’s names or mixing up details.
• Over-personalization: Making the ceremony more about themselves than the couple.

We once witnessed an officiant tell a “funny story” about the groom’s college antics that left the bride’s family cringing. While mishaps can be forgiven, these moments are a reminder of the importance of choosing an officiant who understands boundaries and respects the gravity of the day.

The Photobombs: Unexpected Entertainment

Then there are the moments officiants unintentionally steal the show. From unintentionally blocking the first kiss with an overenthusiastic cheer to accidentally photobombing the perfect shot.

Deciding whether to hire a professional officiant or ask a friend or family member to officiate is a big choice. Each option has its pros and cons, and the right decision depends on your priorities.

Professional Officiant

• Experience: They’ve likely officiated numerous weddings and know how to handle unexpected situations.
• Customization: Professionals often craft personalized ceremonies that reflect your relationship.
• Reliability: They’re familiar with the legal requirements and ensure everything is done correctly.
• Neutrality: A professional brings an unbiased presence, which can be helpful for blended families or complex dynamics.

Cons:

• Cost: Professional officiants typically charge a fee, which can vary widely.
• Less Personal: While they can personalize the ceremony, they don’t have the same emotional connection as someone close to you.
• Unadaptable: Some professionals may resist non-traditional ideas, making collaboration harder. This can be difficult for your planner/coordinator to work with. Choose someone open to teamwork for a better ceremony.

Friend or Family Member

• Cost-Effective: Usually, there’s little to no expense involved.

Pressure: The responsibility of officiating can be stressful for someone close to you.

Inexperience: Unless they’ve officiated before, they may not know how to handle nerves or unexpected challenges.
